7 Essentials for Your Space: Aesthetics + Function

Anyone mat think that of all structures an architect designs, it’s the house that is easy to plan. Wrong. It’s actually as had as other buildings, or even harder. To design a person or a family’s space, their activities and interests should be considered. It should somehow reflect their personality. I believe that a house design should be different for every individual. And as a designer, I should make clients at home with their homes.

1. Spaces and requirements. These are the must-have rooms in a house (living, dining, kitchen, bedrooms, toilet and bath, laundry, carport). Others need extra spaces for study and relaxation. Some clients require maid’s room and guest room. In a typical Filipino home, there’s commonly a dirty kitchen.

2. A Relaxing Space. There’s this rule that a well-planned space is not only aesthetically appealing but also calming. So even a small space could look big when planned well.

3. ‘Less is More’. Always true. Over furnishing will not make any area beautiful. Choose furnitures needed.

4. Colors. Colors should be relaxing. They should be in harmony with the design elements – not overpower the space.

5. Lighting. Lighting can set the mood and can turn a boring space into something different.

6. Decorating= comfort. Shopping for home accessories is indeed fun but buying unnecessary objects for our homes will not make it stress-free anymore.

7. Taking Something from the Outdoors. Personally, I love the outdoors. Having live plants inside the house is relaxing. It’s easy to maintain and way better than buying plastic plants and flowers.
